SONG OF
SORROW
Author Patrick Mendoza’s book chronicles one of the least known and most
shameful chapters in American history. In November of 1864, a village
of
Cheyenne
and Arapaho Indians were awakened to the sound of cannon and gunfire in the
early morning hours. They were camped near Sand Creek in Colorado
under the protection of the U.S. Government, to whom they had already
surrendered. Troops led by Colonel John Chivington proceeded to murder and
mutilate some 160 Native Americans, most of them elderly men, women and
children.
