As
a boy growing up in upstate
New York
, Paul Pape dreamed of being a cowboy. Cartoons were fun to watch on Saturday
mornings but westerns were what captured his imagination. This fascination with
a life that he was not born to would stay with him into adulthood and, indeed,
become part of who he is at heart.
Since moving
to California
in 1978, Paul has traveled extensively throughout the American West. Such well
known places as Tombstone, Deadwood, the Hole In The Wall hideout of Butch and
Sundance, and countless battle and fort sites, Indian dwellings, gravesites,
abandoned mines, the Oregon Trail and ghost towns…he has been fortunate to see
a lot. Paul has chronicled these travels both in articles for magazines and,
most importantly, photographs. What began as a way to keep visual records of his
trips has now developed into the avid pursuit of photography itself. Paul taught
himself how to work with cameras under widely varying shooting conditions and
the result is a style that is uniquely his own.
Paul’s
images have been featured in national publications and on book-covers. He has
shot a great deal of his work from horseback. His aim is to capture the places
he visits in a way that reflects not only how they are today but how they
were…images that serve as a bridge from the present to the past.
